Of starfish and spider: why small is the new big
Hello again. Don’t mind the funny title.
I just returned from a week-long conference with Christian Associates in Portugal. Rogier kindly invited me to join them in a conversation, under the guidance of ‘the Al-stein‘ Alan Hirsch, on how CA might evolve into more of a movement.
The conversations basically followed the lines of Alan’s book The Forgotten Ways. We were also asked to read ‘The Starfish and the Spider: the unstopable power of leaderless organisations‘, a book that I borrowed from a fellow web-designer and that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading…
For me this week was more about getting to know CA, since we’re still trying to team up with other wannabe-missionaries to Europe. Getting to know many of the people of CA was a great experience. This is one cool club of people! We will be trying to meet with some of them in the future and to check out their initiatives.
It has been an inspiring week of thinking through some revolutionary ideas and meeting some great people. In the coming weeks I will try to get some of my thoughts processed and, who knows, blogged…
One topic that stuck with me after discussing it with Andrew Perriman, was that of the core: the Gospel of Christ. Being a Christ-centered missional community means being passionately aware of the power of the Gospel of Jesus in our own lives and in the context of the people we are trying to reach.
For Alan ‘Christology’ is the center of his Apostolic Genius (the ingredient for ‘movement-kaboom!‘). This, of course, rings true. But again central to this, I think, must be a passion based on experiencing the Gospel of Jesus in our lives and being able to effectively communicate this in our context (with words if necessary 
).
The Gospel, however, is not something (strangely enough) that is often easily explained. Many times we find ourselves mumbling something of an ‘incomplete truth’ about Sin, Jesus and Heaven for the individual. Most of us realize there is more to it than that but find it difficult to clearly and simply explain.
I don’t think the persecuted Christians of the first century or those in the Chinese underground church found it hard to explain though…
